Virus Filtering

• Domain administrators can optionally configure virus filtering for all e-mail boxes in a domain. Note - the domain administrator can be EPCS or this function can be done by the domain owner.
• Individuals can optionally configure virus filtering for their individual e-mail box.

Once virus filtering is activated for an e-mail address, the e-mail server scans all e-mail sent to and from this address. If a virus is found in a message:

• A substitute message is sent;
• The message explains that a virus was detected and provides details about the virus.

Virus filtering at the e-mail server will find and remove nearly all viruses and worms. However, virus filtering at the e-mail server should be viewed as a supplementary level of protection from viruses, not complete protection. Virus filtering at the e-mail server is NOT foolproof and is NOT a substitute for virus protection on individual PCs because:

• No filtering system can be guaranteed to catch all viruses, since very fast spreading viruses can be received before the detection system can be made aware of the new virus;
• The service filters only viruses received via e-mail messages and provides no protection for viruses received via files downloaded from the Web, acquired through open TCP ports on computers, acquired via music sharing services, acquired from other infected computers on a Local Area Network (LAN), or acquired from infected diskettes and CDs;

Therefore NO WARRANTIES ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS SERVICE!

All computers should run virus protection software and users should make certain that the virus software is kept current. All computers with dedicated Internet connections (typically cable service or DSL) should be protected by either a software firewall on each PC or a hardware firewall that protects the entire LAN.
